Making The Connection

The band’s name is taken from the town of Roxboro, North Carolina where the band is based. Formed by mandolinist Ricky Stroud, the group includes Cliff Waddell (guitar), Bailey Moore (bass), David Nance (resonator guitar), and Ronald Smith (banjo). Both Stroud and Waddell are veterans of the Hagar’s Mountain boys, while Smith played a long time with the Lost and Found and Nance spent many years with Jimmy Martin’s Sunny Mountain Boys.

The group has chosen selections from a variety of sources such as Rick Lang, Hershel Sizemore, Jerry Reed, Allen Mills, and Don Schlitz. Waddell offers his own “Good Mornin’ To The Lord,” and Stroud gives a nice instrumental “Timberlake Shuffle.” The tunes include Reed’s “Misery Loves Company,” Sizemore’s “Alone and Broken Hearted,” Lang’s “That’s The Sound of a Breaking Heart,” Schlitz’s “Houston Solution,” and Mill’s “Brown Hill.” Others include “She Just an Old Love Turned Memory,” “My Blue-Eyed Darlin’,” and a really nice a cappella take on “Where No Cabins Fall.” All the members share the vocals and harmonies, and each are very good players. This is a very good initial outing for this North Carolina band.
