Terry Baucom’s Dukes of Drive

Terry Baucom marks fifty years of playing bluegrass professionally with this release on his own label, Driving Duke Records in Elkin, NC.  This project also is his third as leader of the appropriately named Dukes of Drive, having two prior releases in this configuration on the John Boy & Billy label.  As with the first , we have Terry driving the banjo, Will Jones on guitar and vocals, Joey Lemons on mandolin and vocals, and Joe Hannaback on bass.  While Will and Joey trade off on the lead vocals, Terry add vocal harmony on several cuts.  Guest musicians are Justin Moses on fiddle and Dobro™ and Cindy Baucom with lead vocals on two songs and harmony on one more.

The album offers enjoyable listening, with smooth vocals throughout.  There are no instrumentals.  Terry’s wife Cindy takes the lead vocals on the project’s only gospel song – “Will The Light Be Shining Bright” that some listeners may remember from the band Patent Pending.  She also is heard on the Buck Owens number, “Under Your Spell Again.”

As on this band’s first project (4th and Goal)  Terry turns to writer Milan Miller for two songs: “Here Come the Teardrops,” where we hear the banjo style we’ve come to expect from Bauc, and “Every Road I Travel.”  Thomm Jutz adds “Come Back to These Arms,” which receives the strong, hard driving treatment bluegrass music often offers.  “Land on our Feet” will remind you of Boone Creek’s sound.  We hope Bauc and the Dukes will continue to produce fine music for the bluegrass community.
