Wonderland
Martha Spencer is a singer/songwriter/dancer who is based in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains area. She has performed and traveled in the US, Europe, and Australia, while performing with a variety of groups. On this new project, she plays guitar, banjo, and bass. Spencer sings most of the lead vocals in her bright, soprano delivery. She is joined primarily by Kyle Dean Smith who plays guitar, bass, and cello banjo.
There are also a host of guests to include: Jamie Collins (bass), Abby “The Spoon Lady” Roach (spoons, saw), Alex Leach (banjo, guitar), Gary Morin (guitar), Joel Savoy (fiddle), Billy Hurt Jr (fiddle), Lucas Pasley (fiddle), Brett Morris (banjo), Jonathan Ferrell (banjo), Matt Kinman (mandolin), and Leon Frost (percussion, chimes).
Helping out with vocals are folks like Luke Bell, Dudley Connell, Alice Garrard, and others. Many of the songs are written by Spencer to include the title cut “Wonderland,” “Come Home Virginia Rose,” “Enchantress,” “Yodelady,” “Young Rover,” and “Midsummer Serenade.” Other selections include “Summer Wine,” “Walking In Jerusalem,” “Hesitation Blues,” “Wind And Rain,” and the well-known “Bringing Mary Home.”
Spencer’s claw hammer style banjo is featured on “Rags Over Riches,” “Come Home Virginia Rose,” “Midsummer Serenade,” and “Summer Wine,” which also features Smith on a growly vocal. This is very nice new project from Spencer with lots of excellent accompaniment from the cast.
