Two Friends

The Debutones hail from the Pacific Northwest around the Seattle, Washington area. The group is made up of Debby Nagusky (vocals), Don Share (guitar, vocals), Greg Glassman (bass, guitar, vocals), Bob Knetzger (resonator guitar, banjo, pedal steel), and Julian Smedley (violin, viola, vocals). For this new project the band members could not get together in the studio due to coronavirus, so to overcome that situation, the members recorded their own pieces of each song in their home ‘studios’, whether it was a garage, office, dining room, etc. The pieces were then put together by member Don Share and passed on to Dale Atkins of Big Owl Studios, who took care of the final mix and mastering.

The result is this 13-song CD which is a collection of lesser-known tunes and two originals from Glassman. Glassman penned the title cut “Two Friends” and the opener “I’ve Been Thinking.” Other selections include “Penny to My Name,” “Right Beside You,” “Carolina Wind,” “Rainy Day Blues,” “Homesick with the Blues,” and “The Touch of Your Hand.” The band also does a nice version of Peter Rowan’s “Wayside Tavern,” and the Harley Allen/Mel Besher tune “Pee Wee and Fern.” There is also an instrumental of banjo and violin “Jamboree.”

Nagusky sings most of the leads but Smedley and Share also take up a song or two. What is impressive is the tasteful use of both resonator and pedal steel. This is a very nice new project for these five friends who enjoy making music together.
