Twin Sisters

Annie Staninec resides in Portland, Oregon, and began playing fiddle at a very young age. She has been a music teacher and performer and has toured a number of countries. She plays everything from bluegrass to rock and has played with such as David Grisman, Darol Anger and Rod Stewart. She is now a member of the Kathy Kallick band.

Nick Hornbuckle is a resident of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and is known as a skilled banjo player with his own style. He is currently a long-time member of John Reischman’s Jaybirds band. Together the duo has produced a nice collection of folk and bluegrass tunes from a wide variety of sources.

Focusing on the interplay between fiddle and banjo, the selections include the title cut “Twin Sisters,” along with “Pretty Little Indian,” “Hell Broke Loose In Georgia,” “Ducks On The Millpond,” “Little Rabbit,” a medley of “Dry and Dusty/Duck River,” and “Bells of Blackville.” There are two solo selections featuring Annie’s fiddle: “Flannery’s Dream” and “Pa Janvier,” and there are two solos featuring Nick’s banjo: “Chinquapin Pie,” and “Piney Ridge.”

Together the players prove how clean and tight counterpoint playing can be. They complement each other in allowing the melodies to shine while providing musical harmony to the tunes. This is a very nice new project.
