“Starlett & Big John” are Starlett Boswell (vocals, bass) and “Big” John Talley (vocals, guitar). Together they are joined on this project by Jonathan Dillon (mandolin), David Carroll (banjo), and Ron Stewart (fiddle). They are also helped by special guests Mo Canada (guitar), and Skip Cherryholmes (vocals), who also co-produced the album with Talley.
Five of the tunes on the project were written by Boswell who writes a good song whose themes are of relationships, good and bad. These selections include “I’ll Have You Back,” “Heart Collector,” “Shattered Heart,” “Run,” and “Doomed Love.” Other selections come from other writers to include Bill Monroe’s “True Life Blues,” Jim McCall’s “Crying,” Earl Taylor’s “The Children Are Crying,” and David Norris’ “He Walked All The Way Home,” which features a beautiful fiddle introduction from Stewart.
Boswell sings the majority of the leads with an occasional lead from Talley, or, they swap leads or sing as a nicely harmonizing duet. Good arrangements and production make this an enjoyable project which showcases Boswell’s pleasant vocals. Nice new effort from Starlett & Big John.
