MOSLEY BROTHERSTHE MOSLEY BROTHERS

Patuxent Music
CD-336

The Mosley Brothers from central Maryland have won numerous regional band contests such as the Deer Creek Fiddler’s Convention and are becoming more well-known beyond the Maryland/southern Pennsylvania area. The band includes Jacob Mosley (mandolin), Joey Mosley (guitar), Johnny Calamari (bass), and Dean Phillips (banjo), with Michael Cleveland providing fiddle on several tracks.

This first album for the band offers three original songs by Jacob Mosley (“Carry Me,” “Grasping For The Wind,” and “Prisoner Of The Pines”), two songs from local songwriter Jerry Leitner (“Black Shiny Stone” and “Blues Are Just Outside My Door”), a new song from well-known Pennsylvania songwriter Harold Tipton (“Exactly What I Need”), as well as two instrumentals from Jacob Mosley (“Brushy Mountain” and “Foxtail”). The album includes covers of Tipton’s “Who Showed Who” and Del McCoury’s “Rain And Snow.” The band also gives a tip of the hat to the Louvin Brothers on “My Baby’s Gone” and “Kiss Me Like You Did Yesterday.” The highlight of the album is Mosley’s “Carry Me” that includes Patrick McAvinue on fiddle, Rob Benzing on banjo, and Mark Schatz on bass. This song has the strongest vocal and instrumental performance of all the tracks.

The Mosley Brothers band is very strong instrumentally (as demonstrated on “Brushy Mountain” and “Foxtail”), including some very nice lead guitar by Joey Mosley. A nice initial project from a young band that has the right ingredients to branch out into the larger bluegrass scene. (Patuxent Music, P.O. Box 572, Rockville, MD 20848, www.pxrec.com.)TK

I saw the Mosely brothers on YouTube Tube with the father thumb picking. It was wonderful. I wish I could find it on Spotify. All of the players are wonderful. It’s toe tapping and relaxing.
