WHEN THE CROPS ARE LAID BY

Sometimes, a CD passes through your hands that once it’s popped into the player and started, it stops the listener cold. The Gospel Plowboys’ latest effort When the Crops Are Laid By did just that. I’m sorry to say I wasn’t at all familiar with the group before getting this assignment. That’s my loss.

From the first notes of “When I Wake Up To Sleep No More,” these six men sound like no other. While the picking is solid and professional, it’s the vocals and harmony that power these ten cuts. The album is stacked with great traditional bluegrass gospel in addition to the title song. “One Day I Will,” “Cryin’ Holy Unto The Lord,” and “Beulah Land” will have you looking for the nearest revival meeting.

This album is the band’s third effort, and they had some radio attention with “Welcome Home” from their last album. They’ve also had their share of tragedy, losing founding member David Murph in 2017 and founding banjo player John Goodson in 2019. Murph’s song “Heavenly Train” is featured on the album.

The current lineup features Michael Jenkins (guitar/vocals), David Brown (guitar), Andrew Brown (bass/resonator guitar/vocals), Kris Miller (guitar), Charles Honeycutt (banjo), Alec McCallister (fiddle), and Milom Williams (mandolin). Anyone looking to worship while heading down the highway won’t be disappointed. (www.morning-glory-music.com).MKB
