Andrew Collins is a true “Mando Commando,” taking charge of the music in a powerful way. The new album consists of 11 tracks that feature a wonderful interplay between the musicians, Andrew Collins on mandolin, Adam Shier on guitar, and James McEleney on bass.
While some might place this recording into the Dawg Music genre, it leans a little more towards traditional folk melodies and structures. There’s certainly some jazzy elements, but the emphasis remains on the melody.
There’s a nice diversity on the album; there is “Prelude to Cello Suite No.3,” which places Bach firmly in the bluegrass world, with some elegant picking. The opening tune, “Little Widgets”, rips along at a fast pace and shows the dexterity of the players. Andrew Collins and the Trio have been top contenders and award winners in the Canadian Folk Music and JUNO Awards, and this will come as no surprise to anyone listening to this new album. It’s top-notch playing and songwriting from start to finish.
