Long Days and Short Stories
A great writer, no matter what format, songs or stories will not only be able to turn a phrase in a way that catches your ear, but will use that skill to catch your heart as well. A great writer will more often than not remind you of what you already know, but do that in a way that is unique and unexpected.
Daryl Mosley is a great writer and this album offers ample proof. The record plays like an easy-going conversation between friends, moving seamlessly between styles that range from straight uptempo bluegrass to more sensitive singer-songwriter sounds. The songs are built around lyrics that are poignant and plain spoken, which keeps them relatable. No doubt many listeners will recognize an old pal in “A Friend Like You”and maybe hear old family stories in “When The Good Old Days Were New.”
The production is excellent and supports the songs. The musicians are equally in service to the songs, the playing is right on target and never feels like hot licks for the sake of showing off, just as it should be. A fine album that reminds you that simple, relatable stories can be profound, make great songs and are worth sharing.
