Good Measure
Buncombe Turnpike gets their band name from the old 19th century road that ran from Tennessee to Greenville, South Carolina as it passed through Ashville, North Carolina, the town the band calls home. The group includes founder Tom Godleski (bass, harmonica), George Buckner (banjo), Don Lewis (fiddle), David Hyatt (guitar, banjo), Korey Warren (bass, mandolin, guitar), and guest Charlotte Warren (fiddle).
The stories, folk songs, and culture of the people using the old road became part of what the band would base their music on, as Ashville is known for its bluegrass community and this band is one of the best. Six of the fourteen songs on this new project were written by band members and include “Good Measure,” “I Ain’t Got You,” “Step On Up,” “First Last Goodbye,” “Smokey,” and “Short Tailed Squirrel.”
Others are Steve Young’s “Seven Bridges Road,” The Dillard’s “Dooley,” the upbeat “Hot Rod Lincoln,” and Billy Ed Wheeler’s “Ode To The Little Brown Shack Out Back.” The group is solid in their presentation and execution of the songs, both vocally and with their playing. As this is the fifth release from the group, it looks like they will continue on a successful path down Buncombe Turnpike.
