Christmas Time Is Here
This accomplished band was founded by three alumni of the final line-up of Doyle Lawson’s Quicksilver: Jerry Cole, Eli Johnston and Stephen Burwell.
Most of the song choices here are utterly familiar: “Let It Snow,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” etc. But the results are surprisingly fresh and dazzling in a mellow and old-timey way.
The moving title tune, the swingy rendition of “Let It Snow,” the galloping “Sleigh Ride” and the tender “There’s a New Kid in Town” also possess a sort of nostalgic Norman Rockwell glow.
One real change of pace is the bluesy, tongue-in-cheek “Christmas Comes but Once a Year” in which the singer celebrates the holiday while also contemplating his post-New Year’s credit card balance. The song features some delightful extended breaks on guitar, piano and other instruments.
Some of the instrumental arrangements are jazzy and compelling, while the vocal arrangements and harmonies are warm and nostalgic. This is certainly fine music to wrap your presents to while ushering in the holiday spirit.
