It’s The Music
North Carolina native Frank Poindexter is uncle to the Rice Brothers, Tony, Larry, Wyatt, and Ron. Through Mountain Fever records and Dex Records, this unique and special project is the last studio session that Poindexter was to play with all four brothers. Sadly, Larry passed away in 2006 and Tony in 2020. This session has Poindexter on resonator guitar, Tony Rice on guitar, Wyatt Rice on guitar, Larry Rice on mandolin, Ron Rice on bass, and guest Rickie Simpkins on fiddle.
The selections kick off with the a cappella title cut “It’s The Music,” then continues with a mix of familiar tunes and lesser-known offerings. The more familiar include “Old Spinning Wheel,” “Morning Glory,” “Washington & Lee Swing,” “Last Thing On My Mind” and “Sweet By And By.” Other selections include “Hound Dog Rock,” “Crazy Creek,” “Kitchen Pickin’,” and “Blue Side Blues.” There is a nice vocal on “I’ve Got A Woman,” and “Just Before Dawn” starts slow and speeds up along the way.
While Poindexter’s resonator guitar is dominant on most cuts there was plenty of room for the other players. And as Frank put it “I’m grateful to have these recordings and I am honored to share them with you!” Frank is a current member of the popular North Carolina band, Deeper Shade of Blue.
