Stephen Mougin’s recent release, Ordinary Soul, is his highest-profile entry to date. He’s flown somewhat under the radar as the long-time guitarist in the Sam Bush Band, but with this entry, Steve has established credentials as a top-notch singer, songwriter and producer.

Mougin’s warm, expressive voice and dazzling guitar chops are featured in the 12 original tunes, all but one co-written with high-level contemporaries. 

Mougin is joined by the Gibson Brothers, who accompany him on “A Place For A Fool,” a song co-written with the duo. 

Mougin, Bush and Buller let loose with some blazing instrumental fireworks in “Railroad Man.”  This tune, written with fiddle player Becky Buller, is a jaunty tribute to the long-gone age of the Iron Horse.  

“Color Me Lonely” (co-written with Jon Weisberger), “A Place For A Fool” and “Play Me A Sad Song Again” (co-written by Vida Wakeman) are all exquisitely crafted honky-tonk heartbreakers worthy of George Jones. 

“On The Riverside” reveals layers of wisdom and sensitivity… finding spiritual sanctuary amid the pain and travail of everyday life. It was co-written with Kristi Cox and Lachlar Davidson.  

“Song That I Call Home” creates spectacular lyric imagery and vivid turns of phrase.

On the lighter side, Mougin and Bush team up on a sparkling revival of the 1960s Buck Owens hit, “Only You And You Alone”, written by Robert J. Wooten.

Contributing artists include Becky Buller, veteran bass player Mike Bub, Sam Bush and other members of the Sam Bush Band. Jana Mougin, Steve’s wife, a distinguished bluegrass musician in her own right, rounds out the list.
