JAY UNGER & MOLLY MASON
A FIDDLER’S HOLIDAY WITH THE JAY UNGER & MOLLY MASON FAMILY BAND

Rounder Records
11661-9153-2

This is a live concert performed and recorded last fall at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. While it is a little late for the 2012 holiday season, this project can be enjoyed anytime, especially on a snowy winter’s night or an evening at home.

The concert features Jay Unger (fiddle), Molly Mason (piano, guitar), Ruth Unger (fiddle, uke), and Mike Merenda (banjo, percussion), accompanied by the lively UMW Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dr. Kevin P. Bartram. Following introductions, the selections include “The Solstice Set” (a medley), “A Rovin On A Winter’s Night,” “The Snowstorm,” “Themes From Harvest Home Suite,” “Waltz Of The Little Girl’s Toys,” and a closing of “Lights Of Chanukah,” “Silent Night,” and “Silent Night Two Step.” Of course, no performance of Unger and Mason could be complete without a reprise of their wonderful composition “Ashokan Farewell” which was the featured underlying theme for the Civil War PBS series.

This is a wonderful performance by these accomplished artists, produced and directed by Emmy winner Jim Brown. A video of the concert is also available. (Concord Music Group, 100 N. Crescent Dr., Beverly Hills, CA 90210, www.jayandmolly.com.)BF
