BACK WHERE I COME FROM
TW Productions
TW2018
This group, based in Ontario, Canada consists of three McDonalds, John (guitar), Justin (guitar) and Nick (mandolin), along with Tyler Beckett (fiddle), Sheldon Speedie (bass), and Dave Jack (banjo), forming an award-winning ensemble who have been entertaining folks for a number of years. The group’s 2018 awards from the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards include Vocal Group and Overall Group, and their song “Back Where I Came From” won Recording Of The Year award. Sheldon Speedie won Bass Player Of The Year, while fiddle player Beckett is an Honor Roll Inductee for his numerous awards.
This new project is an example of why these awards were earned. The band’s sound is bluegrass with a contemporary edge and features the songwriting of the McDonalds mixed in with a few more familiar tunes. The McDonalds share the lead vocals and harmonies, and all bandmembers are good musicians and have produced a delightful project. The original tunes include “Red River Line,” “Oh Carolina,” “Only A Memory,” “Parts Of You,” “Forever In A Song,” and “Falling.” Banjo player Jack contributes “Wound,” while other selections include Gillian Welch’s “Tear That Still House Down” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Redwood Hill.” There are also two Monroe covers, “Used To Be To You” and the instrumental “Roanoke.” This is a very enjoyable project from this popular Canadian group.
