North Carolinian Adam is the brother of Jake Burrows, and they used to perform under the title of the Burrows Brothers. They were previously part of the Lonesome Will Mullins Band, as well as the Kevin Prater Band. Adam has now released this project under his own name. However, it’s shown on his website as being the product of Adam & Mikayla & The Bluegrass Tradition.

On the recording, Adam handles lead vocals, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and bass as well as some tenor, baritone, bass vocals on selected tracks. Jake Burrows plays banjo on the project and provides tenor and bass vocals. He also plays lead guitar. Mikayla Hyde plays bass on seven tracks and sings tenor on “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could.” Cassie Smith is shown as tenor vocalist on three songs and lead vocals on “Pretty Polly.” Tim Norris plays bass on one track and sings vocals on two songs. Kevin Prater is guest guitarist and high baritone vocalist on Billy Boone Smith and Mel Besher’s “Roy Lee.”

The project consists of 14 tracks, all covers of mostly traditional material from the likes of Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Reno & Smiley, and Flatt & Scruggs. The sparse liner notes indicate “Roy Lee” is dedicated to the memory of James King (recorded on his Thirty Years Of Farming collection), although no mention of writers is provided. In fact, no writer credits are listed for any of the songs. This is a disappointing flaw in an otherwise solid performance, both vocally and instrumentally, of some of the chestnuts we enjoy in the bluegrass community.
