Leave A Light On
Fiddle player Glen Harrell founded Volume Five in 2008 after hearing other musicians in some local jams. Based in Mississippi, Harrell asked local players Jason Burleson (guitar, vocals) and Chris Wade (banjo) to join the group, and back then, he also brought in Nick Keen (mandolin) and Wyatt Harman (bass). There have been the usual changes over the years, and now the current band includes Aaron Ramsey (mandolin, vocals), Jacob Eller (bass), and Jeff Partin (resophonic guitar, bass).
According to Harrell, this new project is “all about the songs,” which speak of life’s experiences and circumstances. The band has chosen tunes from a variety of songwriter sources that include the likes of Jon Randall, Peter Rowan, Josh Miller, Bob Minner, and Jim Krueger. Selections include “County Wishing Well,” “Walking Among The Living,” “I’m Gonna Love You Like There’s No Tomorrow,” “Pine Tree Skyline,” “We Just Disagree,” and “Dreams Like That.” Band member Partin offers “Dying All Over Again,” “What Can You Do,” and the title cut “Leave The Light On,” which was written by pianist Grayson Lane, who also plays on the song.
Over the years, the band has won many awards and nominations from such organizations as IBMA, GMA (Gospel Music Association), and Josie Music Awards, and songs from the band have topped many of the bluegrass music charts. With this new project, Harrell has achieved his continued goal of finding and playing this music with the right kind of band members, producing the right kind of sound that will last for some time to come.
