Presenting Carolina Bluegrass Style

The members of Carolina Bluegrass Style are based in the Columbia, South Carolina area, but spend most of their performing time in the venues around the area of Ashville, making them true to their Carolina name. The band consists of founding member Tommy Thomas (bass), along with Don Ashley (fiddle, vocals), Tyler Chasteen (guitar, vocals), and David Prosser (banjo, vocals). Their combined musical influences include Western Swing, Jazz, traditional and contemporary Bluegrass, and even Reggae.

On this new project, the band combines some original material from the members along with covers of songs by such sources as Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and Gillian Welch. Songs by Chasteen are “Ain’t Coming Back,” and “When I Die,” while Ashley contributed “Chances Never Taken,” and “Don’t Die A Sinner.” Other selections and covers include “You’re Still On My Mind,” “Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Could You Be Loved,” and “Tear That Stillhouse Down,” and there is a nice version of “Jamaican Farewell.”

On this project, the band sticks close to their bluegrass roots with mostly banjo-driven arrangements, while still including a bit of their other influences. With solid rhythm from Chasteen and Thomas, Prosser’s banjo provides the drive along with Ashley’s fiddle work. More is sure to come from this Carolina group.
