It Never Gets Old

Chosen Road’s latest release, It Never Gets Old is a collection of soulful gospel tunes highlighted with wonderfully blended vocals and instrumentation.

The group has been together for over a decade and produced a chart-topping album, Appalachian Christmas, last year. This reviewer was fortunate enough to review Water Grave a few years ago—an early, solidly bluegrass album from the group. This new work is another step up.

There are some band-penned tunes among the 13-song collection. Zachary Alvis (mandolin/vocals) and Jonathan Buckner (guitar/vocals) wrote one of the album’s best, “One Willing Soul,” and combined with Dave Clark on “That’s What Heroes Do.” Alvis also wrote “Jesus Wear the Crown.” These three are among the best. Also powerful is “That’s What Love Looks Like to Me.”

Tyler Robertson (bass guitar/vocals), Josh Hicks (banjo), Chris Stockwell (dobro), Stephen Burwell (fiddle), Mike Rogers (percussion), and Jared Easter (steel guitar on three tracks) round out the band. 

If you caught that “percussion” reference above, the album does include drums and might seem at times more like “Christian”—how Apple Music has it categorized—than straight up bluegrass. That’s not meant as a negative, it’s good music.
