Dreams For Sale
There aren’t a lot of brother-sister duos in any genre of music, so when one comes along and has the harmonies of Theo and Brenna MacMillan, music fans should pay attention. The siblings, who call themselves Theo & Brenna, have released their first full length album on Mountain Fever Records, Dreams For Sale. It has eight songs they wrote together or individually, and four covers.
One of the first singles released was “Be My Baby,” made famous by the Ronettes in 1963. Brenna makes the song work with her sweet vocals and driving banjo work and should be a radio hit.
In addition to the title track, “Mercy So Tender” and “Burn Down the Sun” stand out among their original works. They do a fine job on Emmylou Harris’ “Red Dirt Girl” and also take on Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” and the Osborne Brothers’ “I Can Hear Kentucky Calling Me.”
In addition to the bulk of the writing, Theo provides guitar and vocals. Guests on the CD include Harry Clark and Mary Meyer (mandolin), Maddie Denton (fiddle) and Mike Bub and Evan Winsor (bass). Theo & Brenna mention in the liner notes that the goal was to offer a representation of what a live show is like. It is a solid debut and raises expectations of what this young duo will offer in the coming years.
